Nuttall's Woodpecker

Our first stop was Mission Trails park where we had nice looks at White-tailed Kite, Western Meadowlark and more for a good start on our score card.

From there we went into Santee Lakes where Tricolored Blackbird and many waterfowl were added to list.

Northern Flicker

Lesser Goldfinch

A blown radiator hose threw a kink in our game plan so we enjoyed a walk around the lake while we awaited a replacement bus.

White-crowned Sparrow

We soon hit the road for Lindo Lake where we picked up a few unexpected treats like Red-naped Sapsucker and Downey Woodpecker.

El Monte County Park is where we ate our lunch under the big oak trees where we picked up Oak Titmouse, American Robin, etc..

Mallard

Heermann's Gull

With time running short we headed for Quivira Basin cutting out the most southern part of the itinerary.

We picked up many new birds here but were still short of our century mark at the cutoff time of 1500 so we pretended to look the other way as we drove past festival HQ heading for the San Diego River channel for some high speed "air-conditioned bird blind" birding!!

Pacific Loon

Burrowing Owl

Without getting out of the bus we crept along the channel adding amazingly cooperative birds in rapid fire succession! This Burrowing Owl was a nice treat to end the afternoon as we pulled into HQ about 30 minutes late with 108 species!!
