Acorn Woodpecker

Arriving in the mountains for our first stop proved to be chilly and most of the birds were seeking the same sunshine we were! A short hike from Paso Picacho Campground in Cuyamaca State Park gave us a White-headed Woodpecker.

Cuyamaca Lake was the perfect spot to enjoy our lunches... in the warm sunshine!  The Wood Quail below was one of several carvings in the park of which a couple have nest holes used by Pygmy Nuthatch.

Wood Quail...

Eating our lunch was constantly interupted by new birds coming into view! Looking at the shadow of this female Brewer's Blackbird, it is possible we found Micky Mouse in disguise!

Fox Sparrow

Day two began in Brawley at Cattle Call Park.

Fox Sparrow was an unexpected treat as we were serenaded by Western Meadowlark and others.

Zone-tailed Hawk

This Zone-tailed Hawk has been wintering in the area as was this young female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

The weather could not have been finer as we visited the birdiest sites around the Imperial Valley.
