Looking around the Colorado River valley for late migrants.

The morning was really cool, but by the time we quit it was getting really hot!

Mittry Lake

At Mittry Lake we found lots of Wilson's and several Townsend's warblers.  A young male Lazuli bunting was perched and singing.  Also there were several pretty butterflies.

Further north along the river we spotted Ladder-backed Woodpecker, the ubiquitous Marsh Wren, and a late Ring-necked Duck.  In the bottomlands we watched a beautiful singing Blue Grosbeak.

Monarch Butterfly

Female House Finch

At Laguna Dam we walked a drainage ditch and then along the river.  We heard a secretive Common Yellowthroat, an invisible Yellow-breasted Chat, and a Bell's Vireo.  We got glimpses of Western Wood Pewee, Warbling Vireo, and a Cooper's Hawk.  A nice surprise was a female Goldeneye hanging around in the river.  We gave in to the heat after that, and headed back to Yuma!
