Yuma Big Day Trip - 3 Feb 2001

A full-day trip to try for 100 species. Alas, only got to 83.

It was a warm and sunny morning--a fine change from our below-normal temps from the past two weeks. We drove south of town and found this kestrel perched on a snag on Ave A.

American Kestrel	Further south we happened on a private residence with a "bird sanctuary" garden. Looking in from the road we found Gambel's Quail, Abert's Towhee, Ground Doves, and Costa's Hummingbird among the desert landscaping.
At the lemon grove we found lots of sparrow species, but no more Western Bluebirds. And at the alfalfa fields we saw lots of Long-billed Curlews but no Mountain Plovers. We did see good numbers (5) of Ferruginous Hawks south of town.

Our next stop was along the Colorado River where we had lunch and looked over some backwaters constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation at River Miles 31 and 33. The previously reported Tundra Swans weren't there, but we had fine looks at Cinnamon Teal and four Common Snipe.

Vermillion Flycatcher	At Senator's Wash we got the Common Loon. The Desilting Ponds yielded lots of ducks. Below Imperial Dam we found this cooperative Vermillion Flycatcher.
The final stops were at Mittry Lake and Betty's Kitchen, where we added a few sparrows and Western Grebe.	Vermillion Flycatcher
