Black Phoebe

Vermilion Flycatcher

January two started out cold, foggy and very winter like for the valley.  When the fog lifted it turned out to be a fantastic day!  I ran into Eric at Cattle Call Park and we searched out the Gray and Vermilion Flycatchers.

Phainopepla

Lewis's Woodpecker

I swung by Las Flores Drive thinking I would add the Lewis's Woodpecker to the year list real quick but it was two hours before it suddenly showed as if it had never left!  This bird is feasting on Pecans and most of the Lewis's seen here in the Imperial Valley have been near a Pecan tree.

Kershaw Road

Black-necked Stilts

Heading home, I went up Kershaw Road from Rutherford, which passes between Finney and Ramer Lakes, to check out the flooded area by the Alamo River. The river runs low this time of year but I did not expect the pond to be this low.

American Avocets

Green-winged Teal

There were a few good birds in there and I was fortunate with the last rays of sun offering enough lighting to digiscope these scenes.

The sunset kept getting more spectacular so I went into Ramer Lake and was dazzled by these scenes!

Ramer Lake

Ramer Lake dock

A Lone Forster's Tern was feeding just off of the dock and would add new ripples and dimensions to the reflections with each dive.
I stopped in front to listen for the Great Horned Owls and got more than I expected. The female had been calling from this pole.  One male flew over from the palm and they mated. The second male then flew over and the two males were sparring in the twilight.  What a day!!
