Julia overlooking New River

New River

Julia is working on her thesis and was interested in the migration of people, birds and water in Imperial Valley.  Julia, Anne and I started our day with a visit to the "Slabs" with it's numerous "snow birds" and a look at the Coachella Canal as it flows west to the Coachella Valley.  We then moved on to the Salton Sea and checked out the bird life and the Alamo and New Rivers where they enter the Salton Sea.  Lunch was in Brawley where they got a taste of Johnny's famous food and a taste of small town life!  From there we went straight to Calexico and the Mexican Border.  We traveled east along the border to the new east Port of Entry and then came back through Calexico to get a look at the New River as it flows northward from Mexico.  Yikes!!  It had been a beautiful day until we stepped out and looked into the New River.  We moved on quickly!

All American Canal

Moving west out of Calexico we followed the All American Canal along the border.

The sun was setting quickly and we got to see a Peregrine Falcon as we came onto the canal.  Near Mount Signal we came across large numbers of Cattle Egrets gathering along the canal.

As we got out to enjoy the sight, a huge flock of Cattle Egrets, with a few Great and Snowy Egrets in the mix, came flying into the roosting trees.
Border Patrol is full time here and you can bet we were being watched with optics as good or better than those we were watching birds with.  We passed along the bird watching bug!
