We started our
adventure from the Calipatria Inn, just at sunup, and were into
good birds right from the start. Just outside of town we had
a field with over 700 Mountain Plover, and the Prairie Falcon that
tends to follow them around for some reason. |
Painted Lady

Chestnut-collared Longspur
|
We made a
loop out into the agricultural area to the east where we had lots
of sparrows and we found our longspurs.

Yellow-footed Gull
|
We headed for the Salton Sea from here and walked
the sonny Bono Salton Sea NWR for a bit. We then birded along the
shore looking for Yellow-footed Gull. I looked across the pond at
Lack and Lindsey seeing nothing unusual. Shucks, no
YFGU. Then Sue says "what about the big gull that was
in the pond?" We back up and sure enough, I drove right
past an adult Yellow-footed Gull that let us get these fine pics!

Our next destination was the New River
Wetlands Project Imperial and Brawley sites. The birding was great
and the sunset we experienced from the Brawley site was truly
fantastic. |
