A day of birding with Beth from Pennsylvania. A morning from Ramona to the mountain peaks and down along the coast for the afternoon.

Lark Sparrow

Before the sun was upon us we were gaining altitude from Ramona CA.  Near Wynola we stopped at an open area where we had our first Western Bluebirds and plenty of Lark Sparrows.

We were able to compare Raven vs. Crow here too! A quick stop for coffee in Julian and on to Kathie's where the birding was so fast our coffee got cold before we could get to it!  A small group of Wild Turkey strutting through the

yard was our first clue that it would be nice. Band-tailed Pigeons were at the drinker. This hen Turkey with only one chick and Mountain Quail with over a dozen young were not afraid of us and came right in. Selasphorus Hummingbirds chased everything that approached "their" feeders!

Mountain Quail with young
Western Meadowlark and Red-tailed Hawk awaited us in Cuyumaca meadow. Cuyumaca Lake was extremely low and I had heard that it was expected to be dry within 30 days due to the drought. This Osprey had

no intention of letting those fish go to waste! Double-crested Cormorant, a few Brown Pelicans, Great Egret and a Caspian Tern were here too!
Red-shouldered Hawks were calling everywhere but we never were able to get one in our sights for more than a second.

Double-crested Cormorant

White-tailed Kite
This White-tailed Kite enjoyed a tasty looking morsel as a lone Common  Raven waited patiently a few limbs below for leftovers. I don't think it got much!
A few more stops going down the hill and then we were headed  for the PacificOcean! Our adventure along the coast is on page TWO.
