A short, pre-Thanksgiving
scouting of the Lower Colorado Valley with Don Stoecker and Henry Detwiler
46 species total
Don, an
accomplished birder from Montana, wanted to pick up a few more
birds for his already extensive Arizona state list. We
weren't able to locate any blue-winged teal, but we did find him
an Osprey and a Brown Pelican.

Osprey along Colorado River
|
We drove up the east side of the Colorado River and stopped at
Fortuna Pond first. Not much happening there, so me moved on
to Betty's Kitchen and Mittry Lake. A lot of N. Flickers
out, but hardly any ducks at Betty's Kitchen. On the hill
overlooking Mittry Lake we spotted the Brown Pelican and our first
ducks. Also there was a small flock of Red-breasted
Mergansers. Not even any Cinnamon Teal in the canals.
(it is hunting season) Our return trip took us down
the west (California) side of the Colorado River.

Osprey along Colorado
River

At West Pond I found this Belted Kingfisher
perched on a snag. Further south, we found this Osprey in a
tree on the banks of the Colorado, close enough that I could get
some nice shots through my scope. And when it took off, it
headed over Arizona just for Don!
