These pictures are from a trip that Ed Kandl and I took to the Mfuwe Lodge in the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.  On one of our drives from a bush camp, we noticed a number of vultures flying overhead, and decided to investigate.  We came upon an African elephant that had been killed several days earlier.  The tusks had been ripped out and the elephant's trunk cut off.  I took some black and white photos at that point; three days later I took color slides.  Click on the thumbnails for full-size images.

African Elephants

White-backed Vulture

Keenan & Victor thought it was shot 3 days ago.

Three more days and the legs had been stripped clean by the vultures.

The trunk was cut off and the tusks pulled out.

The white streaking is vulture excrement.
