Birded with Kathie Satterfield on her monthly Tecolote Canyon bird walk in San Diego, CA.
It had been raining for several weeks and had rained quite hard the night before the walk.
The morning started out with heavy overcast and a threat of rain that never materialized and turned out to be a beautiful day.
We waited at the Nature Center till the appointed time but it appeared that the threat of rain had kept everyone indoors so Kathie and I proceeded up the canyon on our own.
A little way in we ran into three brave souls who had hiked down from a residence on a side canyon to join us for the walk.
The birding was great and we watched Ravens building a nest, Common
Yellowthroats, Song Sparrows and others singing their hearts out as Spring was trying to get through the cloud cover.
Three Nutall's Woodpeckers played hide and seek through the trees over our heads and a Northern Flicker came in to see what the ruckus was about.
The Tecolote Canyon Nature Center is near the junction of Interstates 8 and 5. On I-5, just South of I-8, get off on the Tecolote Road / Sea World Drive. East of the freeway the road is called Tecolote and West of the interstate it is called Sea World.
Go East and Tecolote Road will dead end into the parking lot of the nature center.
Tecolote means Owl in Spanish.  The trail goes several miles up the canyon and is easy going with a few benches along the way.
The creek runs water year round.  California Gnatcatcher breeds here and can be found along the trail, though we did not hear them this trip.
