Family: Gnatcatches (Sylviidae)
Genus & Species : Polioptila californica
Status: This small (4.5") gray bird is locally common to uncommon in coastal chaparral. Due to declines in its population it is federally listed as a "Threatened" species due to habitat loss.
Habitat: Coastal sage scrub chaparral in southern California.
Best Chances: These non-migratory birds are probably easiest to find in spring when they are actively singing/calling, but we've found them in every month. One very reliable spot is the trail on the south side of the San Elijo Lagoon, accessed from the north end of N. Rios Ave. in Solana Beach.
